A reactor scale 8.8 earthquake hits the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage. The earthquake also triggered a number of fires.

 

Television footage shows a heavy distortion as cars, ships and even buildings have been swept away by a vast wall of water after one of the highest magnitude earthquakes in Japan.  Incident happened at 14:46 local time. Tsunami waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, officials said.

 

Reports say that these waves could be ten meters. A heavy possibility of causalities is feared. Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years. The tsunami warning was extended to the Philippines, Indonesia and the Pacific coast of Russia. India is said to be out of danger from this tsunami.
